Tuesday 19th February 2008 Lineup
Killaflaw "Led Zeppelin Meets Rave!"

Born from the influences of the rave scene to the rock driven sound of Led Zeppelin, Killaflaw are an explosive act. They consist of Benn Helm - vocals, guitar and studio synths and Andy Paton - synths, samplers, drum machines and trumpet. They have been working together for four years but joined forces officially two years ago due to commitments in other bands.

Killaflaw are a cross over act melding a wide variety of musical genres morphing from hard hitting rock driven breakbeat, bouncy electro to to more acoustic blues infused guitar, vocal and trumpet material. Howling Wolf's song 'Killing Floor', a song covered by Hendrix and Led Zeppelin, is where the Killaflaw name originates and they have also done their own unique version of this song.

Benn Helm has performed in many bands and music projects. He gigged in the The Royal Albert Hall and Summer Pops with The Jones's, backing James Brown, and has been in bands such as Nanmess and Circus. Nanmess were a hard hitting rock band whilst Circus combined Blues and psychedelic rock. He writes his own acoustic material and was also a member of Hendrix-esq band Kush. His original interest in the rave scene has brought them together. His raw, energetic and bluesy vocal style, unique songwriting skills and talent for memorable and catchy guitar riffs is essential to the Killaflaw sound.

A graduate in Music and English Literature, Andy Paton has a knack of creating and picking out a cutting breakbeat, an arse dribbling bassline and a heart breaking melody on synth or trumpet. He has performed many solo gigs notably as a resident for the Alien Resonance night in Liverpool and has played across the North West and Wales and he won the mixing category for the Orange Experience competition in 2004. His was in a duo called Betamorphe before Killaflaw was born. One faitful day in 1994 to add to his already vast collection of Prodigy, SL2 and Altern 8 tapes he was given a Korg Poly 61 synth in 1994 at the age of 10 and that's where it all started.

Influences: Prodigy, Orbital and Chemical Brothers, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin to Vaughan Williams to Pink Floyd. Other favourites of ours are Pearl Jam, Jimi Hendrix, Underworld, Leftfield, Death From Above, Soulwax, Add N to X, Felix Da Housecat, Future Sound of London, Erol Alkan, Altern8, SL2, Primal Scream, The Stone Roses, Two Lone Swordsmen, Aphex Twin, Coldcut, Mr Scruff, Jon Carter, Carl Cox, KLF, Ulrich Schnauss, Massive Attack, Bob Dylan, Joy Division, Nirvanna, The Orb, Tangerine Dream, Sky, The Beach Boys, Pendulum, LTJ Bukem, Stockhausen, Hint, Josh Wink, Alter Ego, Justice, Daft Punk, Moby (early stuff), Rage Against the Machine, The Pixies, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Janis Joplin, Gil Scott-Heron, Jeff Buckley, Anthony and the Johnsons, Radiohead, Portishead, UNKLE, Ratpack, 808 State, DJ Hype, DJ SS, NWA.....

Tom Young

"I think it's really good stuff. I'd like to play some on my show sometime" John Peel

"I thought it was good and really catchy. There was a good use of melody lines. It was really funky for an almost breakbeat tune. I'd like to hear more. It peaked my interest definitely!" Tom Findlay (Groove Armada)

''Dance music is on a downer at the moment...Its a calling for all electronic artists to make music that excites people again!''

Tom Young is a 22 year old Big Breaks/Electronic musician and producer. He strongly believes in live dance music and feel that crap DJ's, along with faceless, one-hit bedroom acts (usually 40yr old men [Oi! JK] who cant beat them, so join them!) have spoilt the masses perception of dance music, and he's out to put things right. The connection, energy and buzz from a live crowd is far too important just to limit your music to a recording.

He writes his tracks between his home studio in Suffolk and his tiny room at his uni halls in Liverpool, much to the annoyance of his neighbours! Always writing with live performances in mind, he finds inspiration from jamming and trawling through banks of samples. He's currently working with a number of talented vocalists on his debut album (including the tracks on his myspace) and playing live shows in and around Liverpool, whilst also producing other exciting acts (including Killaflaw) AND completing a degree at LIPA.

He's won a number of awards for his music, including the title of Young Musician of the Year, and the Sound Plus Award for Innovation

Wednesday 20th February 2008 Lineup

The Container Drivers

"This is Very Good" John Peel

"The Container Drivers are a trio from NW England. At the moment we're best known for our Fall tribute, 'The Ex-Members of The Fall Club', which was released in the summer of 2004 on the German compilation LP 'Perverted by Mark E'. Our track picked up airplay on the John Peel show ("this is very good", was his verdict) and around Europe and the US. The much-missed Mr Peel also played a couple of our demo tracks in September 2004. Since then we had our shimmering cover of Television Personalities 'A Picture of Dorian Gray' released on the TVP tribute issued by Canadian label the Beautiful Music. Our last release was our contribution to the Cherryade Records Christmas album, volume 1. 'In the Bleak Mid-Afternoon' was favourably mentioned in reviews and likened to Belle & Sebastian. Hmm! Clearly we were showing our sensitive side on that recording.

Since starting gigging in autumn 2004 we've supported bands including Persil, We Start Fires, Decoration and Steveless. We hope to be releasing our debut single in early 2008 through Cherryade Records. Stay tuned for top shouty noise tune stuff (with added megaphone).

In addition to being a Container Driver, Keg also runs the unofficial Television Personalities website called 'A Day in Heaven'"

Influences: The Fall, Pixies, Television Personalities, surf music, b&w sci-fi films, Orange Juice, Jonathan Richman, Vivian Stanshall, Bogshed, jangle-thrash groups, noise-pop bands.

The Mono LPs

"A Rock-n-Roll Riot"

The Mono LPs are one of the most original and interesting bands to come out of the North Wests recent explosion of new music. The Liverpool three-piece boasts an array of musical styles taken from the bands eclectic influences, which range from the intimate storyteller to the hard-edge guitar pounding RocknRoll. One of the things that set this band apart from most others is the unique sound of the cello weaving its way through the electric riffs and thumping bass lines. This array of musical ideas is fused together by a solid snapping backbeat which is laced with subtle harmonies completing this exciting and original sound.

Influences: The 60s!

"Like Arctic Monkeys jamming with the Buzzcocks .. definitly something there" Gill Mills (iCast)

Young, fresh and true to their roots the boy’s music mirrors the goings on of a local environment .Seeing it as a poetic and interesting place to live as well as highlighting the obvious disappointing aspects .Its true their twist on life is clever and bold for a group so young .

In their spare time the boys enjoy drinking milk , baking their own cookies and playing boardgames with 80's pop blaring over the noise of general confusion.

About to turn it around

Influences: Bloc Party, The Killers, Oasis, Arcade Fire, Joy Division, Half Man Half Biscuit, Elvis Costello, John Cooper Clarke, The Streets, Libertines, The Clash, The Specials , Elvis Costello, John Cooper Clarke, The Streets

About "Keep your ears Peeled"

John Peel was without doubt the most important music broadcaster to ever grace the airwaves. Even if you never listened to his show or didn't like the music he played, unless you only listen to classical or opera your life was undoubtedly touched by him. Take Pulp for example - John Peel was playing his records in 1981, whereas they didn't achieve mainstream success until around 1992. Without JP playing their early cult arty stuff they'd have dissapeared long before they'd developed to the point where they could entertain the masses. How many other DJs can play a record, not because an analyst told them it fits the stations demographic, but because he likes it? Ironically in these days of ever increasing numbers of radio and tv stations we when we should be getting more choice, we seem to be getting less, with stations playing the same 20 or so songs repeatedly for weeks or even months on end, and DJs have less and less control over what they play, it's all in the hands of the money men and their cosy relationship with the record labels. Alas we will never experience his like again.

"Keep Your Ears Peeled" is a live night that started out in Camden, London in 2006 as a tribute to the great man. Not just to revisit and celebrate the great records from the past that never got enough airplay at the time, but to give a platform to today's live bands that we hope he would have liked.

Our booking policy is simple - firstly, we don't book ropey support acts even if they are cheap! We only book bands that we think have something special, and are capable of headlining. Just because a band is on 1st, shouldn't mean that they aren't great!

It's a non-profit making night, like JP we do it primarily for love of the music, not for money, so the entry fee reflects the actual costs of running the night (indeed I've subsidised the night on many occasions).

Above all - it's about having fun!

It launches in Liverpool at The Magnet 45 Hardman Street, Liverpool L1 on Tuesday 19th February 2008, with a second night @ RoadKill Bar, 32 Hope Street, Liverpool L1 on Wednesday 20th February 2008 entry - £2 with flyer. .

England's Northwest is arguably the most musically prolific region in the world, and Liverpool itself is in the guiness book of records for having the most #1 singles of any city in the world (given quite a headstart by some young lads called The Beatles!) of course John Peel himself was born in Heswall in Wirral, and grew up in the village of Burton in Wirral. When better to launch than in the European City of Culture year?
